If you have a student at West Boca High or Sandpiper Shores Elementary, plan on another day at home. The School District of Palm Beach County announced Wednesday evening that six schools stay closed Thursday, Nov. 5. Classes, campus activities and aftercare are canceled, and every other district-operated school is open. Sean Cooley, the district's chief of communications, said the goal is to reopen schools "as quickly as possible."

The closures follow days of heavy rain. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue says crews spent three days getting people out of flood water, starting around 5 p.m. Sunday with more than 70 911 calls from the Century Village area. The county's has been at level 2 activation since Sunday, Nov. 1, and a State of Local Emergency has been declared.

Boca Raton voters will decide March 9 on a $125 million bond for a new police headquarters

Boca Raton voters will decide March 9 whether to approve a $125 million bond for a new headquarters, emergency communications center and evidence storage. It's the second try: voters rejected a $175 million bond in March 2026.

The current station at 100 NW Boca Raton Blvd. was built in 1986. A long stretch of rain at the end of September spurred seven roof leaks, public works director Zachary Bihr said, and mold has made some spaces unsafe.

The new plan asks for less money and a smaller building

  • Ballot: March 9, alongside two council races
  • Site: not named in the ballot question
  • Also on the city's list: 6500 Congress Avenue

The city would pick a site after the vote. Mayor Andy Thomson said that gives officials the chance to "continue to get additional feedback from our residents." Sites discussed so far:

Not everyone's sold. Some residents expressed uneasiness about the missing location. "I think this is doomed," resident Richard Warner said.
